Frequently Asked Questions

Bouquet Subscription – Against the Wind Farm & Gardens

When and where do you deliver?

At this time we deliver our bouquets in the Slocan Valley, from Slocan City at the north end to the junction at the south end, and within Nelson city limits.  If you live outside of these areas you can opt to pick up your bouquet at the farm, or at your designated drop-off place within these areas.

How long is the season?

A lot goes on before we start to cut our flowers. We begin to plant seeds in the greenhouse in February, start to plant out in the field late April or early May, and follow up with succession plantings throughout the summer to ensure that we have blossoms throughout the season. In June we start to cut flowers and continue until frost arrives in September or October.

What kind of flowers will you have?

We grow an extensive selection of annuals that complement the flowers growing in our perennial gardens. Throughout the season you might find Asters, Bachelor Buttons, Celosia, Cosmos, Dahlias, Delphinium, Echinacea, Phlox, Foxglove, Larkspur, Peonies, Poppies, Roses, Scabiosa, Snapdragons, Statice, Stocks, Sunflowers, Sweet Peas, Veronica, or Zinnias in your bouquets. We also have an extensive selection of foliage and greenery that we grow specifically for our bouquets and that grow in our perennial gardens.

What if bad weather or pests affect the crop?

Our flowers are grown outdoors and at times may be affected by weather conditions, as any outdoor crop can be. Our 2016 trial crop produced abundantly and withstood Mother Nature’s whims with grace and beauty. Having said that, there is always the risk of severe weather that may damage our crop. If such circumstances arose we would work to make up for any losses. If pests are a problem we use natural and organic deterrents, or remove the plants all together. We only pick the best blossoms for your bouquets.

What can I expect?

As a subscriber you will purchase your subscription at the beginning of the growing season, and in return you will receive an abundant and sumptuous bouquet of freshly cut seasonal flowers delivered to your door on a weekly or biweekly basis.

How long will my bouquets last?

Our flowers are freshly cut and you can expect your bouquet to last up to 7 days (longer in some cases) with proper care. The life of your bouquet can also depend on the flowers that are used. In order to keep your bouquet looking fresh you should remove any wilted flowers, buds or leaves throughout the week.

How do I take care of my flowers?

Always use a clean vase and fresh water. We use a homemade mix of water, lemon juice and sugar as a flower preservative. 1 tbsp sugar, 2 tbsp lemon juice, to 1 litre of water. You can also add 2 tbsp of bleach to keep bacteria to a minimum. Refresh the water and re-cut stems every other day to keep your bouquet fresh looking.

Can I get an extra bouquet at any time during the season?

Yes, take advantage of our Share the Beauty option. If you want to share the beauty of fresh-cut flowers with a friend, a family member, or another special person in your life, you can add an additional bouquet to your subscription at any time throughout the season, please notify us at least one week in advance.

I love fresh flowers but am sensitive to strong fragrances. Will this be a problem?

Let us know if you have sensitivity to any particular flowers and we will make our best effort not to use them in your bouquets.

If I go away during the season what do I do?

Share your bouquet! Perhaps a friend or neighbor would enjoy your bouquet during your absence, or if you miss a week we can also deliver two bouquets the next week. Please let us know well in advance if you are going to be away and do not need delivery. Unfortunately we cannot offer a refund or credit.

What if I am not home at delivery time?

No problem. You can leave a bucket with water in it on your doorstep and out of the direct sunshine. We will put your bouquet in it, and it will be waiting for you when you get home.

Can I give a subscription as a gift?

Yes you can. Let us know whom the gift is for and how to contact him or her. If you want a gift card sent to the person please provide all relevant details – name, delivery address, etc. The cost of gift subscriptions is the same as regular subscriptions.

How much does a subscription cost and what does it include?

Please see the subscription options on our website.

How do I subscribe? How do I pay?

To subscribe click on the link on our website under the section called Subscribing and Paying. See our payment options and methods under the same section.

What is your refund policy?

We do not offer refunds. However, if you or we are faced with unusual circumstances (such as crop damage from severe weather, or other unexpected events) we can discuss options to make up for any losses.
